My friends, I hear many now speak of a marvelous promise: that when the body grows old, the mind may be transferred into a machine, and thus we shall live forever. They call this “uploading the mind.”
At first, the idea sounds sweet. Who among us does not tremble at the thought of vanishing, leaving behind those we love? Who would not wish to remain, to speak again with their children, to continue their work, to avoid the silence of the grave?
But as always, before we are carried away by desire, let us pause and ask: what is it that truly survives?
